About the role
The Director of Engineering role is part of a mission-driven healthcare technology platform managed by a partner company. This leadership position combines strategic technology leadership with hands-on collaboration across Product, Platform, Security, and Engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership across multiple engineering teams, ensuring successful delivery of scalable, secure, and reliable software solutions.
- Align engineering execution with product goals, strengthen technical practices, and develop high-performing teams that support long-term platform growth.
- Lead multiple cross-functional engineering teams responsible for delivering core product capabilities, platform improvements, and scalable software solutions.
- Translate product strategy into actionable engineering plans while ensuring roadmap delivery within defined timelines, budgets, and resource constraints.
- Partner with Product, Platform Engineering, Security, and other stakeholders to evaluate technical feasibility, estimate effort, and prioritize initiatives.
- Monitor engineering progress, identify delivery risks, and implement solutions to maintain predictable execution.
- Coach and mentor engineering leaders and technical leads, supporting team development, career growth, and strong engineering practices.
- Promote architectural consistency through design reviews, technical decision-making, and collaboration across engineering teams.
- Establish and improve engineering standards related to testing, code quality, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
- Partner with infrastructure and security teams to strengthen monitoring, incident response, compliance, and data protection practices.
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools, automation, and productivity improvements across engineering workflows.
- Build a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Experienced engineering leader with a strong technical foundation, proven ability to scale engineering teams, and a track record of delivering complex software platforms.
- Strong communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to balance business priorities with technical excellence.
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership roles.
- Proven experience managing multiple engineering teams or pods delivering complex SaaS products.
- Strong understanding of modern web architectures, distributed systems, APIs, and cloud-native technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with Product teams and cross-functional business stakeholders.
- Experience planning and delivering engineering roadmaps while managing budgets, priorities, and resource constraints.
- Proven success scaling engineering processes, teams, and operational practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and team-building skills.
- Experience with modern frontend technologies such as ReactJS and TypeScript.
- Experience designing backend service architectures using NodeJS or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with distributed systems and API-driven platforms.
- Experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
- Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana or similar platforms.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building healthcare technology platforms, including EMR/EHR systems or healthcare data solutions.
- Familiarity with HIPAA-compliant architectures, protected health information (PHI), and healthcare compliance requirements.
- Experience working with data platforms, analytics systems, and integration-heavy applications.
- Experience implementing AI-assisted engineering tools and development workflows.
