About The Position The Director of Disability Support Services (DSS) is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for all services, policies, and programs designed to support students with disabilities. This role leads a team that formulates and implements reasonable accommodations and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations. The Director collaborates with faculty, staff, and community partners to promote universal design, accessibility, and equity across campus to create an inclusive academic environment for students with disabilities. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards. Leadership and Supervision:Lead and supervise a team of professional staff using a case management approach to assess students requesting accommodations.Ensure thorough evaluation of student documentation in alignment with institutional policies and legal requirements.Serve as a resource and escalation point for team members, addressing sensitive or high-priority student concerns effectively and empathetically.Caseload Management:Manage a personal caseload of students, conducting intake meetings, reviewing documentation, coordinating individualized accommodations, and connecting students with additional resources such as tutoring and study strategies.Ensure that all accommodations and support services, including academic adjustments, assistive technology, and alternative testing arrangements, are provided efficiently.Budget and Resource Management:Effectively manage the budget allocated for DSS services, including services such as note-taking, sign language interpreting, and other specialized support.Compliance and Policy Implementation:Oversee the implementation and enforcement of college policies and procedures related to accessibility, ensuring compliance with ADA and other relevant regulations.Advocate for policy changes to improve accessibility and inclusion within the institution.Collaboration and Community Engagement:Build and maintain collaborative relationships with Vocational Rehabilitation, community agencies, and other stakeholders to coordinate services for students.Develop and facilitate workshops and presentations to raise awareness and promote a culture of inclusion regarding disability-related issues on campus.Support for Faculty and Staff:Assist faculty in integrating accommodations into instructional practices, ensuring the accommodations outlined in notification letters are effectively implemented.Data Management and Reporting:Maintain detailed records on student accommodations, services provided, retention and graduation statistics, and other accessibility-related outcomes.Report on DSS outcomes and initiatives to senior leadership.Integration with Retention Initiatives:Align disability support services with broader retention initiatives to ensure that students with disabilities receive the support necessary for success and persistence in their academic programs.Other Duties:Perform other duties logically associated with the position as assigned. Skills And Competencies Leadership & Team Management:Ability to lead, develop, and manage a team in a dynamic, student-centered environment.Strong skills in case management, including conducting assessments and coordinating services.Communication & Advocacy:Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and external partners.ability to advocate for the needs of students with disabilities and promote a culture of inclusion and equity.Policy and Compliance Expertise:In-depth knowledge of ADA regulations and the ability to enforce and educate others on compliance requirements.Experience influencing institutional policies to align with accessibility and equity goals.Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills:Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations, identify solutions, and implement effective changes.Ability to manage sensitive conversations and handle student concerns with tact and empathy.Cultural Competency:Sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students and employees.Technology and Assistive Tools:Knowledge of assistive technologies and their practical application in a higher education setting.Ability to support faculty in integrating assistive technology into their instructional practices. Education And Experience Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in counseling, special education, higher education administration, or a related field.Proven experience in leading and developing a team within a dynamic environment.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Experience advocating for equity and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.Demonstrated experience in influencing organizational policies related to accessibility and compliance.Proven ability to manage a caseload, assess needs, and coordinate accommodations.Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds and needs of college students and employees. Preferred Qualifications - A Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field.Advanced knowledge of assistive technologies and their application in higher education.Extensive experience working with faculty to implement accommodations and improve accessibility on campus.Experience in developing and delivering disability-related workshops or presentations.
