Director of Development

About the role

Shepherd’s House Ministries seeks a mission-driven Director of Development to expand fundraising impact across all sites and advance life-changing work. This role provides strategic leadership for individual giving, major gifts, grants, partnerships, campaigns, events, and donor stewardship while representing the ministry with professionalism, integrity, and alignment to its Christian mission.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a comprehensive development strategy aligned with mission, strategic priorities, and financial goals.
• Establish and achieve annual fundraising goals across individual giving, major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships, campaigns, and other revenue sources.
• Build and steward Christ-centered relationships with current and prospective donors, inviting prayerful partnership.
• Expand funding opportunities by cultivating relationships with foundations, corporations, churches, businesses, and community partners.
• Lead fundraising campaigns, events, and communications that effectively convey mission, impact, and funding needs.
• Lead, supervise, and develop the Development Team, setting clear expectations, accountability, and a results-driven culture.
• Monitor and report on development performance, including fundraising activity, donor trends, revenue projections, budgets, and key metrics.
• Collaborate with organizational leadership, the Board, Finance, Communications, and Program teams to identify funding priorities and strengthen impact.
• Serve as a visible ambassador, representing the organization with professionalism, integrity, compassion, humility, and alignment with its Christian mission.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive experience in fundraising, development, nonprofit management, marketing, communications, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies, including major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships, or campaigns.
• Proven ability to cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with individuals and organizations, inviting them to prayerfully partner with Shepherd’s House Ministries.
• Leadership and supervisory experience, including managing a Development team and holding staff accountable for measurable results.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate the mission in diverse settings.
• Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field preferred; nonprofit, ministry, social service, or community-based experience preferred.
• Proficiency with donor management systems and ability to meet organizational requirements, including background checks, valid driver’s license, and occasional evening/weekend availability.
• Ability to remain flexible and adapt well; work well in a team environment and accept input and supervisory guidance.
• Willingness and ability to interact with shelter guests in a compassionate and respectful manner.
• Knowledgeable and empathetic to the needs of the poor and suffering; maintain a positive, professional, Christ-like manner with all donors, staff, guests, and volunteers.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Primarily office-based with regular presence at shelters, program locations, and community settings.
• Regular interaction with donors, staff, volunteers, partners, and shelter guests while maintaining professionalism, compassion, and a Christ-centered approach.
• Work in active and sometimes unpredictable shelter environments involving individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, or other significant life circumstances.
• Exercise sound judgment and maintain appropriate professional boundaries in challenging or emotionally difficult situations.
• Travel throughout Central Oregon for donor meetings, community events, organizational activities, and site visits; occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
• Ability to perform essential physical duties including extended sitting, standing, walking, driving, navigating stairs or uneven surfaces, and occasionally lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds.
• Maintain compliance with safety, security, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards; communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
