About the role
The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for planning, leading, and executing all fundraising, advancement, marketing, and communications strategies for The Pilot School. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Director serves on the Senior Leadership Team and works closely with the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, families, and external partners to ensure the school’s long-term financial sustainability and the strength and clarity of its mission-driven messaging.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all development functions typical of an independent school, including annual giving, major gifts, donor stewardship, events, and advancement operations.
- Lead all communications and marketing efforts, serving as steward of the school’s brand, voice, and public presence.
- Maintain strategic oversight and accountability for all messaging, campaigns, and outcomes related to marketing functions, while supporting some digital marketing through an external firm.
- Manage and support a team of two and play a central role in shaping how the Pilot community understands, supports, and champions the school’s mission of unlocking the potential of every student.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in development, communications, or a related field.
- Proven track record of success in fundraising, event planning, and marketing.
- Experience working with boards of trustees and senior leadership teams.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to craft compelling narratives and messages.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Knowledge of independent school culture and best practices.
- Experience with social media platforms and digital marketing tools.
