Director of Community Development

About the Role

The Director of Community Development manages, supervises, coordinates, researches, and analyzes planning, zoning, building, and other community development activities, programs, and projects for the City of Ada.

Responsibilities

• Develops, reviews, updates, and implements the Long Range Plan, zoning ordinance, and other planning documents and City Council policies.
• Interprets planning and planning-related ordinances and laws; advises citizens on these matters.
• Develops and implements planning, zoning, housing, code enforcement, and development goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
• Represents the City in development and land use matters; participates in numerous public meetings.
• Oversees public and community relations activities related to planning, building, and community issues.
• Supervises the Building Official and oversees enforcement and compliance of building and zoning ordinances.
• Reviews and makes recommendations on zoning and permit applications, site plans, and architectural designs to ensure conformity with the Long Range Plan and other applicable regulations.
• Reviews and makes recommendations on all proposed residential, commercial, and industrial projects; coordinates reviews with City departments and other agencies.
• Selects, supervises, trains, and evaluates staff; prepares and administers the department budget.
• Resolves complex planning and administrative policy questions.
• Provides professional assistance to the Ada Area Metropolitan Planning and Zoning Commission, City Manager, and City Council.
• Meets with citizens, governmental representatives, technical experts, and developers on issues such as traffic, facilities design, housing, parking, commercial development, zoning, and neighborhood improvements.
• Prepares and presents statistical analysis, proposals, reports, and special projects to city leadership and commissions.
• Assists property owners, developers, builders, attorneys, and special interest groups with processing applications and meeting planning and building requirements.
• Works with Pontotoc County, other cities, and local, state, and federal agencies on joint programs and regional issues.
• Researches, analyzes, and recommends policy approaches to legislation and urban development.
• Performs code enforcement, supervises code enforcement staff, and ensures proper filing of planning records and reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution with a major in urban or regional planning or a closely-related field.
• Five years of responsible, professional governmental planning experience, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
• Master’s Degree in Planning or Public Administration and experience with community and economic development issues is highly desirable.
• American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desirable.
• Specialization in comprehensive or long-range planning is preferred.

Pay

Salary range: $84,937.00 - $127,394.00.
