Director of Clinical & Population Health, Pharmacy

About the role

The Director of Clinical Pharmacy is responsible for the oversight, vision, and strategy of the clinical pharmacy programs and services at AtlantiCare. This position supervises and oversees the work of the Coordinators of Clinical Pharmacy, as well as specialized pharmacists, ensuring that clinical programs and services are developed, implemented, and monitored for continuous improvement of medication-use processes within the organization.

The Director provides leadership for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating processes involved in medication selection/procurement, prescribing, preparation/dispensing, administration, and monitoring. This role researches best practices, makes assessments and recommendations, and sets the overall direction of the clinical agenda to support quality patient care objectives.

The Director collaborates with internal committees, outside agencies, medical staff, nursing staff, and pharmacy staff to ensure safe and effective pharmacotherapy and positive patient outcomes. This position develops policies and procedures to optimize drug utilization and medication safety and oversees clinical education programs for Pharm.D. rotation students, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and residents.

The Director supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, addressing pharmacoeconomics, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and supervise Coordinators of Clinical Pharmacy and specialized pharmacists.
• Develop, implement, and monitor clinical pharmacy programs and services for continuous improvement.
• Lead the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of medication-use processes, including selection, procurement, prescribing, preparation, dispensing, administration, and monitoring.
• Research best practices, make assessments, and set the clinical agenda to support quality patient care.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure safe and effective pharmacotherapy and positive patient outcomes.
• Develop policies and procedures to optimize drug utilization and medication safety.
• Oversee clinical education programs for Pharm.D. students, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and residents.
• Participate in educational activities to maintain clinical competency and professional growth.
• Support organizational goals through customer service, performance improvement, and teamwork.

Work Environment

Potential for exposure to hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury. Requires the ability to work at a computer 60% of the time and involves some standing and walking.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the Corporate Director of Pharmacy and directs and supervises the Coordinator of Clinical Pharmacy.

Requirements

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree required; advanced degree (Masters) preferred.
• PGY1 Residency preferred; PGY2 Residency preferred.
• Current license in the State of New Jersey as a Registered Pharmacist required, or eligibility to obtain.
• Clinical specialty training, Board Certifications, and/or publications preferred.
• 6–10 years of clinical pharmacy experience required.
• 6 or more years in management or other significant leadership position required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong time management, organizational, and team-building skills.
• Proficiency with computers.
