Director of Accounting
About the role
This role oversees the Finance and Controlling functions for nine North American production sites within a major industrial minerals company, with a combined annual operating expense budget of roughly $200M+ and annual capital expenditure budget of approximately $50M. The role supervises a team of 10 plant/stockpile controllers and acts as plant controller for any vacant roles.
Responsibilities
- Oversee 10 controllers to ensure accurate, timely month-end close and account reconciliation prep.
- Perform/review analytical month-end reporting and narrative for management. Understand composition of monthly site variances for results meetings.
- Full balance sheet/income statement responsibility for 4 sites/businesses.
- Review all plant account reconciliations for the business segment, ensuring balances are properly explained and supported in compliance with SOX.
- Serve as business partner to the segment President — provide cost information, flag unusual site activity, and prepare financial analysis as requested.
- Seek ways to improve financial reporting over site costs and strengthen controls over site financial processes.
- Gain a working understanding of SAP (plus other accounting systems in use across sites) to validate information from controllers and fill in during vacancies, leaves, or vacations — including reports, queries, journal entries, and capital expenditures. Understand the capital/fixed asset module to support controllers and ensure timely closeout of capital projects so depreciation commences correctly.
- Manage the annual budget cycle across all locations, including oversight of manufacturing cost budgets, coordination with operations and supply chain, and deadline management with plant controllers.
- Provide general oversight of annual physical inventory counts and surveys — reconciliation, posting, and proper cutoff procedures. Support inventory transaction accuracy and perpetual/ledger reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly freight variance calculations for internally sourced inventory, requiring understanding of FIFO costing layers.
- Provide oversight and guidance to plant controllers on purchasing/AP issues, fixed assets, expense and capital projects, and local regulatory matters. Assist with internal/external audits.
- Manage and develop plant controllers: lead recruiting, cover vacancies, drive training/development, succession planning, and performance feedback.
- Potential for additional responsibilities such as identifying cost and efficiency savings, understanding product cost drivers, ensuring accuracy of annual cost roll-ups, proposing and designing cost models, preparing ad-hoc cost analysis, reporting special project results with conclusions and recommendations, and updating impacted reporting as needed.
- Identify unusual transactions and coordinate proper accounting treatment with the corporate accounting team.
