Director, IT PMO & Strategic Initiatives
About the Role
AVIXA is looking for a hands-on, strategic project leader who can turn technology ideas into measurable results. As Director, IT PMO & Strategic Initiatives, you will lead the IT project portfolio and drive high-priority initiatives that support AVIXA, our members, and the broader AV industry.
This is not a traditional PMO administration role, and it is not a coordination-only position. You will build structure, strengthen governance, create portfolio visibility, and personally drive priority work to completion. You will manage a Business Analyst and help teams adopt practical project management and business analysis habits without adding unnecessary process. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves role for a results-oriented leader who can clarify decisions, remove roadblocks, align stakeholders, and turn plans into progress. The role sits within Information Technology, but the impact reaches across AVIXA. You will partner with Education, Membership, Marketing, Expositions, Finance, Operations, Customer Support, and other teams to deliver technology projects that make work easier, smarter, and more effective.
The right candidate will stay close to the work, bring order to ambiguity, and translate technology conversations into clear plans, momentum, and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead the IT project portfolio: Create a clear, practical view of active work, priorities, risks, decisions, and delivery commitments.
- Drive strategic initiatives: Lead cross-functional technology programs tied to compliance, strategy, digital experience, operations, and member value, including Business Intelligence, Salesforce, AVIXA.org, Learning Systems, AI, ITSM, and event technology.
- Strengthen delivery discipline: Help teams define needs, plan work, manage risks, make decisions, and communicate progress clearly.
- Communicate with executive clarity: Prepare concise updates, dashboards, business cases, and decision summaries that make progress, tradeoffs, risks, and next steps easy to understand.
- Support AI, automation, and modern work: Help teams use AI, automation, and emerging technology to improve productivity and support better decisions.
- Support change and adoption: Help teams prepare for new technology and processes, understand what is changing and why, and adopt new ways of working after launch.
- Simplify complex problems: Partner with business and technology teams to map processes, gather requirements, evaluate options, and identify where technology can improve how work gets done.
- Lead special projects: Own executive-sponsored technology projects that need judgment, structure, momentum, and accountability.
What Success Looks Like
- You move priorities from discussion to delivery, with clear owners, timelines, risks, and decisions.
- You are comfortable leading without formal authority and influencing across teams.
- You build trust with teams across AVIXA by listening well, communicating clearly, and following through.
- You bring enough structure to create clarity without slowing teams down.
- You help teams adopt change thoughtfully, with clear communication and support after launch.
- You help deliver technology initiatives that support AVIXA’s members, events, education programs, and global AV community.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of experience leading technology projects, programs, portfolios, business transformation, or strategic initiatives.
- Experience working across business and technology teams to deliver cross-functional initiatives.
- Experience coaching teams on practical project management and business analysis habits, including requirements, decisions, risks, and status communication.
- Experience managing, mentoring, or directly supporting a Business Analyst or similar role is preferred.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to create clear executive updates and decision materials.
- Ability to influence, facilitate, and build alignment without relying only on authority.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity, balancing changing priorities, and staying hands-on when needed.
- Practical understanding of project management, Agile, Scrum, business analysis, governance, change management, and technology adoption.
- Relevant certifications such as PMI/PMP, PRINCE2, Six Sigma, or Prosci are a plus.
- Experience with ClickUp, Salesforce, Microsoft tools, PowerBI data and analytics, AI & automation, associations / events / education / membership organizations is a plus.
