At Houston Methodist, the Director Facilities Management position is responsible for overall operations of the Facility Management Services (FMS) and Safety departments, as applicable.
Responsibilities
- Oversee building and equipment maintenance, design and construction activities, central plant operations, and ground maintenance for the hospital complex.
- Formulate business plans to drive growth of FMS, manage results, and ensure positive client relations at Houston Methodist campuses.
- Track FMS operations against industry standards.
- Serve as advisor for facility issues and initiate/support leadership development programs.
- Oversee department staff activities to ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives.
- Accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development and compliance, staffing decisions (hiring/terminating), coaching, counseling, and developing policies/procedures for a safe and effective work environment.
- Ensure training, monitoring, and operations initiatives comply with ethical/legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.
People
- Direct, develop, and implement strategic and operational projects through independent work or facilitation of work teams.
- Oversee management of staff development to meet quality, service, and cost-effectiveness objectives.
- Provide timely guidance and feedback to strengthen knowledge/skill areas.
- Direct management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees.
- Meet or exceed department turnover goals and employee engagement metrics.
- Conduct regular department meetings, round on employees, complete performance appraisals, and provide coaching/corrective counseling.
- Build strategic relationships across departments to achieve business goals.
- Promote teamwork and lead/facilitate process improvements.
- Organize FMS group to deliver best-practice services.
- Formulate, secure approvals, and implement policies/procedures for FMS operations.
- Develop staffing plans and distribution logic for subordinate managers and staff.
- Establish collegial and customer-oriented relationships with Houston Methodist leaders.
- Act as liaison for project issues and communicate strategy/results to staff, administrators, board members, and physicians.
Service
- Oversee department operations, projects, schedules, and activities to ensure goal accomplishment within prescribed time frames.
- Set priorities and functional standards to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
- Drive department service standards to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction scores.
- Serve and participate on entity committees as a department voice.
- Assist in developing long/short-term plans for expansion, renovation, and continual improvement of FMS.
- Plan and integrate projects/services to provide high-quality facility management at the lowest life-cycle costs.
- Participate in meetings and provide project status updates, including scheduling and financial updates.
Quality/Safety
- Ensure a safe and effective working environment; monitor/revise department safety plans and accreditation/regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain staff credentials and competencies per accrediting/licensing agency requirements.
- Employ a proactive approach to optimize safe outcomes and information systems through workflow improvements and collaboration.
- Implement process improvements using lean principles.
- Role model situational awareness and use teachable moments to improve safety.
- Ensure employee compliance with policies/procedures and address non-compliance (e.g., licensure, disaster plans, in-services).
- Work with regulatory agencies to gain approvals, resolve issues, and ensure compliance with building codes.
- Maintain knowledge of regulatory standards and local/state/national codes.
- Provide oversight of compliance activities, including occupational safety regulatory compliance.
- May serve as Safety Officer and/or chair of the Physical Environment Safety committee during accreditation surveys.
Finance
- Develop and manage department operational and capital budgets, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Proactively identify and plan for capital needs related to equipment and future projects.
- Ensure staffing plans and schedules meet department needs with cost-effectiveness in mind.
- Create strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs through productivity optimization and resource efficiency.
- Participate in the implementation and management of business process systems for scheduling, control, recording, and tracking.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or related field; may substitute with four additional years of experience (beyond minimum) for Houston Methodist employees.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Eight years of related work experience, preferably in a healthcare setting; may substitute with seven years of progressively responsible experience (two in project/people management) for Houston Methodist employees.
