Director, Electric Utilities

About the role

The Director, Electric Utilities will report to the Vice President, Electric Utilities and will be responsible for developing and executing near-term and long-term strategies to help the STACK Development team integrate data center projects. The Director will manage and review consultant studies, support the development team related to transmission needs, and manage relationships with various external stakeholders. The role also supports new corporate priorities and initiatives such as internal process improvements, exploring new markets, energy procurement efforts, and regulatory/policy advocacy.

The ideal candidate will have experience owning and managing external relationships, experience in the energy industry (particularly load interconnection processes), the ability to translate technical issues for non-technical team members, and strong problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage the load-interconnection process and serve as a primary point of contact with the utility for data center projects.
• Own, cultivate, and manage utility relationships to foster collaboration.
• Document the utility’s load interconnection process, including financial commitments, cost responsibilities, timelines, and power commitment milestones.
• Support reviews of utility contracts related to projects.
• Forecast and manage utility budgets for projects.
• Work closely with the development team to build business cases for each project.
• Support leasing activities to understand power delivery timelines.
• Review and vet potential data center sites to assess power delivery viability.
• Develop near-term and long-term strategies with the Vice President, Transmission Strategy to improve internal processes (e.g., workflows, communications, deliverables).
• Understand planning practices of utilities and ISO/RTOs in assigned regions, including reviewing planning processes, modeling assumptions, cost recovery, cost-allocation principles, and load interconnection processes.
• Manage relationships with utilities and RTO/ISOs to support project-specific efforts, including site due diligence, interconnection requests, studies, and alternative transmission solutions for constrained areas.
• Collaborate with STACK Energy and STACK Policy teams to improve processes for data center integration (e.g., planning process improvements, load interconnection queue reform).
• Prepare presentations, track market activity, and provide weekly/biweekly reports.
• Collaborate with other business units (preconstruction, supply chain, design and engineering, sales, legal, tax) to support STACK Development.
• Aid in preparing business cases and recommendations for leadership approval.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (preferred).
• 10+ years of experience in the energy space (utility, consulting firm, renewable energy company, etc.).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office product suite.
• Strong analytical, detail-oriented, creative thinking, and communication skills.
• Comfort creating and implementing organizational processes and strategies.
• Ability to execute, process, and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and stakeholders.

Pay

Compensation range: $209,300.00 - $234,600.00.

Schedule

• Location: Denver, CO, or within 1 hour of any STACK site in the central region (Dallas, Chicago, New Albany, San Francisco, Virginia, Atlanta).
• Travel: 10-20%.
