Director, Academic Advising

About the role

Directs college‑wide undergraduate academic advising activities and student retention initiatives at G. Brint Ryan College of Business to ensure their alignment with the RCOB and UNT strategic priorities. This includes setting priorities and goals, performance planning, implementing best practices, leading advising staff, developing policies, and managing resources.

The G. Brint Ryan College of Business serves nearly 9,000 students and is AACSB‑accredited, offering cutting‑edge degrees that prepare leaders.

Responsibilities

• Strategic planning and communication for RCOB advising and retention, defining priorities and goals in collaboration with leadership.
• Performance planning and management, setting objectives, designing metrics, monitoring progress, and aligning staff performance.
• Best‑practice management: researching, planning, and implementing advising best practices and related software solutions.
• Talent development and management: mentoring, coaching, and supervising senior advising staff, fostering a collaborative culture.
• Policy management: developing, updating, and ensuring compliance of advising policies with university, state, and federal regulations.
• Resource management: identifying, acquiring, and efficiently utilizing advising resources, including hiring staff.
• Academic advising oversight: scheduling appointments, orientation, new‑hire training, and maintaining continuity of advising practices.
• Lead or participate in special projects tied to UNT and RCOB strategic initiatives.

Requirements

• Master’s degree.
• Four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with change management and scale/capacity management.
• Data‑driven decision‑making skills.
• Adaptability and ability to pivot quickly.

Skills

• Considerable knowledge of university policies and procedures (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
• Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
• Strong leadership, presentation, critical‑thinking, and creative problem‑solving abilities.
• Effective verbal and written communication with diverse populations.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with occasional nights and weekends.
