Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) work closely with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to help them achieve the fullest lives possible by empowering them to overcome challenges in areas and activities that would otherwise prevent them from being self-sufficient.

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitor people supported to ensure safety regarding medical, health, behavioral, and environmental issues
  • Absorb daily living skills (e.g., lifting, transferring, toileting, personal hygiene, laundry, cooking etc.)
  • Implement Individual Plans and the Outcomes, Goals, and Strategies
  • Complete paperwork as assigned including documentation (e.g., incident reports, progress notes, behavior data, drills etc.)
  • Conduct drills as needed
  • Absorb banking and budgeting and assist with shopping, when applicable
  • Plan, assist, and participate in community outings with people supported (e.g. visiting family, friends, church/temple, shopping etc.)
  • Maintain living environment in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) and health department standards
  • Administer and record medications pursuant to State and Agency requirements, when applicable
  • Accompany people supported on medical emergencies as needed
  • Work with people supported as assigned by supervisor
  • Complete all agency required trainings for position
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license (not provisional) with a clean driving record
  • Must be able to transport people supported as needed

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required
  • Intermediate computer skills required
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills necessary
  • Must work effectively within a team environment
