About the role

Join the Department of Transportation as a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic and help keep Allegheny County's equipment running strong. Responsibilities

  • Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment including sweepers, mixers, and loaders.
  • Perform preventive maintenance such as diagnostics, tune‑ups, tire changes, and system adjustments across multiple mechanical components.
  • Complete state safety and emissions inspections, ensure compliance with specifications, and prepare required records.
  • Identify mechanical problems using diagnostic tools, determine proper repair methods and parts.
  • Perform field adjustments and minor repairs, and demonstrate repair techniques to other employees.
  • Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey‑level mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, including at least one year with diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • Active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with FMCSA regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions.

Pay

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at an annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

Schedule

Full‑time position. Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch. Shifts may vary seasonally, due to weather, or based on operational needs. Telework is not available for this position.
