Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment. The position supports safe and dependable operations for both the team and the community, offering steady challenges and opportunities to grow mechanical expertise.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs on cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment, including engine and system components.
• Carry out routine inspections and service tasks as preventative maintenance to keep equipment in safe operating condition.
• Conduct official safety and emissions state inspections and complete all related paperwork.
• Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and determine required repair methods.
• Follow safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, and report hazards and injuries immediately.
• Make necessary adjustments and minor repairs during field operations to support safe equipment use.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (or equivalent Federal Government job title), or two years of journey‑level mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment (including at least one year with diesel vehicles or equipment), or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• Valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
• Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
• Valid Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.

Additional Requirements:

• Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• Obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
• May be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific equipment.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Schedule

Full‑time position. Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break. Telework is not available.
