Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic
About the Role
This Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic role with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers a chance to keep essential equipment running safely and smoothly. You will build strong mechanical skills while supporting crews that maintain PennDOT’s fleet in Clearfield County. Responsibilities
- Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment, including engines, transmissions, and electrical components.
- Perform preventive maintenance: diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, system repairs, and routine servicing on vehicles and equipment.
- Conduct official state safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation.
- Maintain and repair motorized hand tools such as chain saws, compressors, tampers, mowers, and trimmers.
- Make necessary adjustments and minor repairs in the field to ensure safe operation and reduce wear.
- Follow safety procedures, report hazards, document injuries or damage, and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
Requirements
- Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
- Two years of journey-level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, including one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Qualifications
- Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
- Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
- Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
- Must pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
- May be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
- Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- Conditional offer of employment requires submission of criminal history reports, drug screening, and medical examination.
Schedule
Full-time employment. Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs. Telework is not available for this position.
Pay
Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at an annual salary of $56,607.00 (before taxes).
