Determining the role of the internet in violent extremism and terrorism: Six suggestions for progressing research

About the role

DCU Institute of Future Media, Democracy and Society is seeking a researcher to contribute to its portfolio of projects examining media, democracy, and digital technologies. The role involves working across multiple research initiatives focused on disinformation, media pluralism, deliberative democracy, and digital media literacy.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to research design, data collection, and analysis across several active projects
• Produce high-quality academic publications, reports, and policy briefs
• Collaborate with internal and external research partners across Europe and beyond
• Engage with stakeholders including policymakers, civil society organisations, and media professionals
• Present research findings at conferences, workshops, and public events
• Support the development of new research proposals and funding applications
• Participate in the supervision of postgraduate students and research assistants
• Contribute to the Institute's public engagement and knowledge exchange activities

Requirements

• PhD completed or near completion in political science, communication studies, media studies, sociology, or a related discipline
• Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage
• Demonstrated experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
• Knowledge of key debates in media and democracy, including disinformation, media pluralism, or deliberative democracy
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Skills

• Experience with research software such as NVivo, SPSS, R, or similar tools
• Familiarity with social media analysis, content analysis, or survey design
• Project management experience
• Experience engaging with non-academic stakeholders
• Competence in additional European languages is an advantage
