Design Coordinator, Cycling & Micromobility Unit
About the role
The Cycling & Micromobility Unit is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Design Coordinator to aid in the design and development of ready construction plans for bicycle infrastructure projects across the five boroughs.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed proposed street designs that rebalance existing streets to integrate bicycle facilities, pedestrian improvements, and traffic calming to enhance safety for all street users.
- Create comprehensive AutoCAD drawings showing vehicle and bike lane configurations, intersection treatments, curb alignments, roadway dimensions, vertical elements, and pavement markings.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other key stakeholders to translate conceptual designs into technically accurate construction documents.
- Review and quality-check drawings produced by junior staff, consultants, and other team members.
- Manage multiple concurrent design projects and prioritize work to meet critical deadlines.
- Develop and maintain AutoCAD standards, templates, and best practices for the unit.
- Coordinate with other DOT divisions, including Geometric Design, Borough Engineering, and Traffic Signals, to ensure design consistency and to contribute to updating designs to reflect best practices and emerging designs that support many forms of micromobility, different trip purposes, and levels of comfort.
- Conduct site visits and field measurements to verify existing conditions and inform design decisions.
- Prepare design presentations and graphics for community meetings, stakeholder engagement, and internal coordination.
- Ensure all designs comply with AASHTO, MUTCD, and NYC DOT standards.
- Support junior staff training and technical development.
Requirements
Advanced AutoCAD proficiency with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience producing construction-ready civil engineering or transportation design drawings.
Strong understanding of roadway design principles, geometric design, and complete streets concepts.
Knowledge of protected bicycle lane design standards and implementation best practices.
Experience applying MUTCD, AASHTO, or NACTO design guidelines.
Experience with survey data, existing conditions mapping, and incorporating field measurements into designs.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) for creating presentation graphics and visualizations.
Experience with ArcGIS or other GIS software for spatial analysis and mapping.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality technical drawings.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
Valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver's License (desirable).
Qualifications
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, one additional year of professional experience as described in "2" above.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, two additional years of professional experience as described in "2" above.

Pay
$64,157.00 – $92,657.00
