About the role

The VA Amarillo Health Care System, Amarillo, TX is seeking a Dermatologist to focus on researching, diagnosing and treating skin disorders and diseases. for the location in Amarillo, TX.

Responsibilities

  • Complete patient examinations and may perform minor skin surgeries, prescribing topical medication for skin problems.
  • Perform dermatological procedures based on various factors including type of skin cancer or noncancerous growth, location, size, number, and aggressiveness of the tumor, patient’s general health, side effects, possible complications, and the dermatologist's experience and familiarity with a particular procedure.
  • Evaluate patients by thoroughly examining them. Obtain appropriate clinical, laboratory, and other pertinent data to determine the care provided.
  • Interpret and evaluate clinical data to determine diagnosis and clinical status.
  • Prescribe appropriate and timely treatment; apply indicated therapeutic procedures; recognize and assess changes in behavior, symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts about the patient and modify the treatment plan accordingly. Recognize own capabilities and limitations.
  • Be readily available and quick to recognize emergency situations, take timely necessary actions, and have active certification in BLS, ACLS, or both as required by facility Bylaws.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with patients and relatives through competence and interpersonal skills to ensure they are informed participants in the treatment effort.
  • Recognize the need for consultation and utilize facility or clinic specialty skills in diagnosis and treatment. Respond to inpatient/outpatient consultations in a timely manner, document consultations according to procedure, and collaborate with the primary team or clinician on the patient's care and management.
  • Record the History/Physical and other examinations and changes in patient's status promptly. Report unusual incidents to the appropriate official. Keep clear, accurate, and adequate clinical records current and completed at time of discharge. Utilize the Computerized Patient Record System. Complete and sign daily progress notes and orders.
  • All encounters should be completed daily by the physician as this affects hospital funding.
  • Consults closure: Consults are required to be completed by the provider at the time patient has been seen.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board Certified in Dermatology (preferred).
  • Experience implementing policies/protocols that are required in Medicine.
  • Experience working to improve the management of flow with dermatology patients referred from Primary Care.
  • Physical Requirements: Light lifting, under 15 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking; Standing; Both legs required; Be able to see a computer; Hearing (aid may be permitted).
