This position is within the Office of Attorney Ethics (OAE), a mission-driven team dedicated to upholding the highest standards of independence, integrity, and fairness. As Deputy Statewide Ethics Coordinator, you will support the statewide District Ethics Committees (DECs), working with approximately 600 volunteer members and 53 DEC officers across New Jersey. The role requires exceptional organizational skills, proactive issue identification, and strong interpersonal abilities to foster collaboration and trust among stakeholders.
The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. Participation requires high-speed home internet access and the installation of a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet. Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.
Responsibilities
- Act as the Deputy to the Statewide Coordinator within the DEC Unit, supporting and assisting half of the 18 District Ethics Committees.
- Serve as the primary liaison attorney, responding to questions and requests for assistance from assigned District Ethics Committees.
- Provide support to ensure disciplinary investigations and hearings proceed in accordance with Supreme Court time goals.
- Attend District Ethics Committee meetings on a rotating basis throughout the year, which may occur in person and occasionally after normal business hours.
- Review the legal sufficiency of case documents submitted to the Disciplinary Review Board or the Supreme Court.
- Appear before the Disciplinary Review Board and the Supreme Court as determined by the Statewide Coordinator.
- Ensure the timely processing of grievances through tracking and follow-up with District Secretaries.
- Review and assess the legal sufficiency of investigation reports and disposition documents.
- Conduct legal analysis and recommend courses of action in cases proposed for diversion or other disposition on consent.
- Assist in the coordination of outreach and recruitment of new members for the District Ethics Committees.
- Prepare and participate in OAE training and legal education programs for the District Ethics Committees, the Bar, and other audiences.
- Maximize the use of Microsoft Office and other software to produce efficient reports and memoranda.
- Provide additional assistance as requested by the Director or Statewide Ethics Coordinator.
Requirements
- Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school.
- Three years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law performing legal research and analyzing legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.
- One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may substitute for one year of the required experience.
- Active plenary license as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey with Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.
- Possession of a driver’s license valid in New Jersey, if necessary to perform essential duties.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. according to Department of Homeland Security regulations.
Supplemental Information
- Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), all newly hired employees must establish and maintain principal residency in the State of New Jersey within one year. Exemptions may be requested based on hardship or employer critical need.
Pay
The salary range for this position is $100,154.67 to $145,874.92 for Schedule A, and $100,154.67 to $138,581.18 for Schedule B. Newly hired individuals typically start at the minimum of the salary range. Current Judiciary employees receive a 5% increase upon promotion or advancement, not to exceed the maximum of the range or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater.
Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A. Employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.
