About the role

Responsibilities
- Undergo Academy training in preparation for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff.
- Support and train during the Academy in areas including leadership, professionalism, criminal law, vehicle operations, arrest and control, firearms, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, custody operations, community policing, and problem solving.
- Upon successful completion of the Academy, may be promoted to Deputy Sheriff.
- Assist in custody operations, including securing and releasing inmates, managing housekeeping activities, escorting and transporting inmates, logging visitors, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
- Perform patrol duties, including responding to complaints, issuing citations, making arrests, investigating crimes, serving warrants, and facilitating community-based policing and problem-solving solutions.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years old at time of appointment.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license and POST certificate.
Qualifications
- Some experience demonstrating competency in law enforcement, criminal law, and related areas.
- Some examples of qualifying education include graduating from high school, passing the GED Test, or obtaining a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.

Pay
Starting Salary: Deputy Sheriff Trainee - approximately $45.18 per hour. Upon successful academy completion, eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff with a salary of approximately $47.44 per hour / $98,675.20 annually.
Schedule
Deputy Sheriff Trainees and Deputy Sheriffs are represented by the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff's Association (VCDSA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
