About the role
The San Joaquin Sheriff’s Office is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in a career as a law enforcement officer. The Deputy Sheriff Trainee will receive intensive academic instruction and rigorous physical training in law enforcement at a California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Certified Academy. Additional assignments will be provided on a training basis to learn departmental policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, and background investigation as a condition of employment (county pays for initial drug screen and physical).
- Pass the Physical Agility Test (PAT) and written exam to advance in the recruitment process.
- Candidates may submit POST PELLETB T-scores (42 or higher) from other agencies in lieu of the written exam, provided scores are on official letterhead, in PDF format, and within the last 12 months.
- T-scores must be attached to the application or emailed to mslopez@sjgov.org.
- Physical agility exams from other agencies or academies will not be accepted as substitutes for the PAT.
- Retesting within 30 days (same or different agency) invalidates results; candidates must wait at least 30 calendar days before retaking the PELLETB exam.

Pay
Approximate salary: $5,839.76 - $7,098.26 per month.
Benefits
- Hiring Incentive: $10,000 cash incentive for new hires in this classification (active during program approval by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors).
- Moving Stipend: Up to $2,000 reimbursement for relocation costs directly associated with employment.
- Vacation Accrual: Rate consistent with candidate’s total years of public service.
- Sick Leave: Credit for up to 160 hours of non-reimbursable sick leave from previous employment (subject to county cash-out provisions).
