Deputy Probation Officer I

About the role

This position provides casework services to probationers at the direction of the Superior Court under the provisions of evidence-based practices and consistent with the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration.

Responsibilities

• Supervise caseloads of assigned probationers, meeting with them in their homes, schools, or workplaces.
• Conduct interviews and social or presentence/pre-disposition investigations.
• Evaluate probationers' progress and assign work to other employees as needed.
• Perform closely structured supervision and observation to ensure compliance with probation conditions, including directing and counseling probationers and parents/guardians for juveniles.
• Conduct field contacts (home, work, treatment facilities, schools, community restitution, or detention) as part of a team.
• Build relationships to encourage compliance with case plans, including conditions of probation, through frequent telephone, work/school site, and day/evening home contacts.
• Direct or refer probationers and parents/guardians (when supervising juveniles) to community resources, treatments, or other interventions based on assessments and probation conditions.
• Participate in case review conferences to determine if a change in the level of supervision is warranted.
• Obtain, assemble, secure, and maintain complete identification records, including arrest reports, contact notes, and case plans, to prepare written reports for the court.
• Monitor payment of restitution and probation fees, ensuring victims' notification rights are provided according to statutory requirements.
• Investigate cases referred to the Officer and make written reports to the court.
• Perform searches, collect breathalyzers/urinalysis samples, and make documented efforts to locate absconders.
• Serve warrants, make arrests, and bring persons before the court, including defaulting probationers facing revocation.
• Exercise the authority of Peace Officers in the performance of duties.
• Appear and testify in court.
• In confrontational situations, appropriately and effectively respond using defensive tactics and techniques learned at the Defensive Tactics Safety Training Academy when necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Through proficiency testing, demonstrate competency in and understanding of physical and verbal defensive tactics techniques, including the following (or comparable alternatives):

• Forcefully raise arms above head (straight arm wristlock and takedown).
• Perform minor aerobic activity.
• Stand for up to 2 hours at a time.
• Engage in balanced movements.
• Throw hand strikes (fist strikes and palm heel strikes).
• Use impact weapons (ability to swing arms in a striking action with a 16-ounce baton).
• Kick at targets below 24 inches (front snap kicks).
• Perform controlled falls and return to standing position unassisted (break falls and recovery).
• Complete hand strikes and kick drills at partial speed.
• Sustain exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.
• Engage in fighting techniques while on the ground.
• Bend knees to lower center and touch the ground with one hand (break fall recovery and baton closing techniques).
• Bend knees to a 45-degree angle (all ground techniques).

Proficiency testing is based on the ability to perform the skills or tactics necessary for self-defense.
