Deputy County Counsel I/II/III/IV/V (Attorney position)

About the role

This position is within the County Council Department of Kern. The department provides opportunities that contribute to the improvement and strengthening of Kern County.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and representation to the County Council and other County departments.
• Assist in the drafting and review of contracts, ordinances, and other legal documents.
• Represent the County in court and administrative hearings.
• Advise on compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Manage caseloads and coordinate with other legal professionals as necessary.

Requirements

• Active membership in the California State Bar.
• Admission, or eligibility for admission, to the United States District Court for Eastern California.
• The ability to travel to remote locations within Kern County.

Qualifications

• Level I: No specific experience required.
• Level II: One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney, preferably with experience emphasizing municipal law, trial practice or administrative law.
• Level III: Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. One (1) year of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.
• Level IV: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. Two (2) years of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.
• Level V: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. Three (3) years of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.
