About the role

This position is within the County Council Department of Kern. Opportunities are available for Deputy County Counsel I through Deputy County Counsel V.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and representation to the County Council and other County departments.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of ordinances, resolutions, and contracts.
  • Represent the County in administrative hearings and court proceedings.
  • Advise on compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Prepare legal documents and briefs for court filings.
  • Manage caseloads involving juvenile dependency, tax and bankruptcy, administrative law, civil litigation, employment and labor law, and workers' compensation.

Requirements

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Admission or eligibility for admission to the United States District Court for Eastern California.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations within Kern County.

Qualifications

  • Level I: No specific qualifications beyond active bar membership.
  • Level II: One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney, preferably with experience emphasizing municipal law, trial practice or administrative law.
  • Level III: Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. One (1) year of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.
  • Level IV: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. Two (2) years of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.
  • Level V: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. Three (3) years of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with legal research databases and case law analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Pay

Salary levels range from Level I ($3,234.00 - $3,864.93) to Level V ($5,972.63 - $7,137.85), paid bi-weekly.
