About the role

The County of San Mateo Coroner's Office is seeking a dedicated and compassionate candidate to fill the role of Deputy Coroner. The position involves providing services with efficiency, courtesy, and respect.

Responsibilities

• Provide efficient, courteous, and respectful services.
• Conduct death investigations, analyze situations, gather critical information, and conduct thorough interviews.
• Work with various stakeholders including families, witnesses, and law enforcement.
• Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed reports.
• Ensure compliance with California laws governing reportable deaths and the Coroner’s role in determining cause of death.
• Manage and respond to emergency situations involving deceased individuals.
• Collaborate with medical professionals and forensic experts.
• Train and mentor new staff members.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Willingness to work shifts 24/7, including holidays.
• Ability to obtain a Basic POST Certificate within one year of hire.

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or equivalent, demonstrate willingness to work shifts 24/7, and understand the need to obtain a POST Certificate within one year of hire.

Skills

Knowledge of California laws governing reportable deaths and the Coroner’s role in determining cause of death, criminal investigation techniques, understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology, experience working with bloodborne pathogens, and experience conducting investigative work.
