Deputy Coroner
About the role
This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice. Examinations Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application. Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%. Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Responsibilities
- Investigate incidents related to death and injury.
- Conduct oral exams and ratings of applications.
- Complete a Penal Code Section 832 course before employment.
- Qualify and carry a firearm.
- Pass a physical examination by the County Physician.
- Work within the Kern County Sheriff's Office, dealing with death, dead bodies, trauma, adverse weather conditions, and travel to various locations.
Requirements
- Two (2) years of full-time, paid investigative experience.
- Completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, or completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner.
- Completion of a firearms course within the first year of employment.
- A valid California Class C Driver's License.
Qualifications
Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. No felony convictions are allowed. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying. Background checks will be conducted prior to appointment.
Skills
Must be able to handle death, trauma, and adverse weather conditions. Must be willing to work shifts on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week as needed.

Additional Information
- Post-offer medical, psychological, and drug screening tests are required at county expense.
- Applicants must present government-issued photo identification.
- The examination will establish a 12-month eligible list from which appointments will be made at the Sheriff's Department.
