Seasonal position with annually recurring periods of work typically lasting six months each year. Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement. Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.

About the role

Located within walking distance of Busch Stadium, home of Cardinals Baseball, and Enterprise Center, home of Blues Hockey. Minutes from the Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, and other attractions. Lambert International Airport and Amtrak are nearby. Employees live in various locations in Missouri and Illinois, with commuting times generally no more than 45 minutes one way. Transportation subsidies are available for mass transit users. A 1% city earnings tax applies to those who live or work within St. Louis City limits.

Responsibilities

• Assist in docking and/or undocking to support water craft movements.
• Perform line lash-up between water craft and tug to ensure lines are properly secured.
• Follow radio instructions to ensure safe vessel operations.
• Maintain a clean work area to ensure a safe work environment.
• Clean, wash, scrub, and/or chip rust in connection with daily housekeeping and preparatory to painting.
• During layup periods from dredging operations, may be assigned to other essential work in the District, such as repairs and maintenance of plant at the Service Base according to individual qualifications and skills.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator’s license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site-specific, job-related requirements, and must maintain this license.
• Position requires a pre-employment and periodic physical examination and/or evaluation under the District Medical Surveillance Program, and may require the use of personal protective clothing or equipment.
• Subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with ER 609-1-1218.
• Completion of DA FORM 7412 required for certain civilian positions identified as safety-sensitive under Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• May require a 1-year probationary period during which the agency evaluates fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest.
• Direct Deposit of Pay is required.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

• Ability to perform the work of a Deckhand without more than normal supervision.
• Skilled in handling ropes and wire ropes; operating barge winches, boat winches, and/or ratchets to fleet river barges.
• Experience removing chipped and/or scaling paint.
• Experience performing housekeeping and/or maintenance duties such as cleaning, sweeping, and/or polishing.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

• Physical effort required in handling heavy equipment and machinery; may lift up to 50 pounds or more.
• Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking.
• Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall.
• Danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning.
• On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice, in dirty or cramped situations.
