About the role

Reporting to the Deaf Mentor Coordinator, this position provides parent education for the Deaf Mentor Program in conjunction with the Early Learning Program and Arizona Early Intervention Program as mandated by Part C (0-3) of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The role requires sensitive and effective communication with families, recognizing diverse cultures and language backgrounds. The Deaf Mentor directs families to community resources, schedules and conducts home visits (in person and via remote technology), and implements appropriate curriculum to meet the needs of deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind children as defined in their IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individual Education Plan). The position also involves creating and maintaining reports and documentation in compliance with federal and state laws.

Travel is required for delivery of services. ASL proficiency is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide parent education for the Deaf Mentor Program in alignment with Early Learning and Arizona Early Intervention Program requirements.
  • Deliver sensitive and effective communication tailored to individual family needs, accounting for diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Direct families to relevant community resources.
  • Schedule and conduct home visits and instruction, both in-person and via remote technology.
  • Select and implement appropriate curriculum to meet the needs of deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind children as outlined in their IFSP/IEP.
  • Create and maintain reports and documentation in compliance with federal and state laws.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies or a related field OR a minimum of 4 years of professional Deaf Mentorship experience (or related position) in lieu of a degree OR a combination of education and experience, with experience granted on a year-to-year basis.
  • American Sign Language proficiency (ASLPI 4 or higher or SLPI Superior Rating).
  • Must pass FBI and State background check.
  • Completion of Defensive Driver Training Program for agency personnel driving on State business.
  • Valid Arizona State Driver’s License.

  • Multiple communication modalities.

Skills & Abilities

  • Utilizing various Deaf Mentor/Visual Communication Sign Language Tools and checklists for monitoring development.
  • Monitoring and assessing performance.

  • Social perceptiveness.
  • Time management.
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication skills to effectively interact with families in appropriate languages.
  • Teaching American Sign Language in classroom and/or remote settings.
  • Knowledge of formal American Sign Language grammar.
  • Skills in ASL for families using American Sign Language for children with varied hearing levels.

Pay

$18.28 per hour.

Schedule

  • Permanent, full-time position (40 hours per week).
  • 12-month work calendar.
