Skills & Knowledge & Qualifications
- Genuine interest in working within care of the elderly
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Attending mandatory training
- Willingness to attend vocational training programmes
- Desired: SVQ Level II or III or working towards minimum SVQ Level II
- Experience in working with elderly persons in a care setting
Outline of Duties
- Assist/support residents with all aspects of personal care in accordance with individual needs
- Absorb role of key worker and carer
- Support residents in all aspects of care needs, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual
- Promote equality for residents ensuring that their individuality, confidentiality, privacy, choice, and rights are respected at all times
- Provide the support required to enable residents to be active as contributors to their own personal care plan
- Participate in group or one to one to promote therapeutic meaningful recreational activities
- Assist in the promotion of continence
- Assist residents with individual dietary requirements ensuring preferences, special diets and any cultural dietary needs are respected
- Assist in the serving of food and drink
- Clean/wash up as required
- Record dietary/fluid intake/output as instructed by senior staff
- Assist in the delivery of care for residents at end stage of life or with a progressive illness
- Assist with last offices
- Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and bereaved
- Answer call system, give assistance as required
- Answer the door and telephone appropriately
- Respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly
- Report on well-being of residents
- Carry out regular checks on residents at intervals determined by senior staff members
- Observe care planning needs for individual residents and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with company policies and procedures
- Ensure correct use of equipment e.g. hoists and wheelchairs
- Participate in safety checks and cleaning of equipment including hearing aids/spectacles
- Dispose of waste as per company policies and procedures
- Escort residents where required, to healthcare appointments and social events if required
- Make visitors feel welcome
- Provide refreshments as and when required
- Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with resident’s personal and financial affairs
- Avoid abuse of privileged relationship with residents
- Promptly report any concerns of abuse as per company policies and procedures
Communication
- Participate in staff and resident’s meetings as and when required
- Participate in the day-to-day staff communication
Health and Safety
- Contribute to the health, safety and security of all residents and colleagues, ensuring the environment remains clean, tidy and free from hazards
- Be aware of and ensure the implementation of the company’s health and safety policy and emergency and fire procedures
- Adhere to infection control policies and procedures
- Report immediately to home manager or person in charge any illness of infectious nature
- Report to home manager, person in charge or handy person, any faulty appliances, equipment, furniture, or any potential hazard
- Report any accident incurred by resident, self, or others
General
- Ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties
- Notify the home manager or person in charge as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty and of your return to work
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures within defined time scales
- Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably be assigned to you
Training and Development
- Participate in supervision sessions
- Be willing to be active in your own development, acquiring new skills and ongoing training
- Maintain professional knowledge and competence
- Attend mandatory training days/courses on or off site
- Participate in relevant SVQ training to achieve required qualifications
- You will be required to register and conduct your working practices with the Scottish Social Services Codes of Practice within 6 months of starting
