Job Summary

Under the oversight of the Plant Supervisor, the Data Services Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications services, cabling, customer premise equipment (CPE), field equipment and terminals. Responsibilities extend to troubleshooting, isolating, and performing the necessary repairs on defective equipment in the network.

Responsibilities

  • Install and Transfer Services: Performs installation of new services for voice, data, special circuits, ethernet, as well as other non-regulated services Range offers.
    • Review staking sheets or maps to install services as designed by Network Engineer.
    • Perform work with appropriate tools / hardware to meet all applicable codes and safety requirements.
  • Services: Voice, broadband, special circuits, ethernet and other customer premise services provided by Range.
  • Cabling: Install, repair and maintain copper or fiber cables in an aerial or buried application and terminate cables using industry standards.
  • Install subscriber carrier systems, including digital, analog, and next generation carrier systems.
  • Ability to work aloft.
  • Repair and Maintain Plant equipment: Perform repairs on defective buried cables and may excavate existing copper or fiber cables, as required, to repair damaged or aging facilities.
  • Coordinate with other technical personnel to diagnose or identify and locate defective equipment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret cable schematics.
  • Perform repairs in access / transport carrier systems and other department related equipment utilizing specialized test equipment.
  • Utilize copper and fiber testing equipment to analyze and identify areas needing upgrades or repairs.
  • Battery testing and maintenance in data centers, communication shelters and remote carrier systems.
  • Perform basic building maintenance and repairs to include HVAC systems, generators.
  • Coordinate repairs with professional contractor if the extent of repairs is beyond the technical ability required for the position.
  • Paperwork and records: Professionally complete all installation and repair-related forms and reports. File and submit accordingly within assigned timeframes.
  • Communicate with other departments on service installations/repairs delivered and advise on necessary updates for billing, facility records, and other company files.
  • Install wireless equipment including point-to-point wireless systems, wireless access points, security cameras, PBX equipment and wiring for the equipment.
  • Maintain alarm systems to maintain equipment and communicate problems that affect company operations / services and impact customers.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a High-School diploma program or GED curriculum / exam (12th grade equivalent) or any other state recognized secondary education program.
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience performing telecommunications data services related functions.
  • A valid, state issued, and insurable driver’s license.

Preferred

  • Completion of one or more of the following certifications: Class A CDL Tower Certification Pole Certification Technical School, a 2-year / associate degree (in Electronics, Telecommunications, Radio, and/or Construction).

  • Equipment Operation: Intermediate skills with operation of hand tools, industry equipment and materials, and testing equipment and systems to troubleshoot and perform repairs and installations. Must have the ability to differentiate between colors.

  • Physical Demands And Working Conditions This role performs assigned work duties within a general office environment and outdoors. Employees may be occasionally exposed to changing weather conditions or contaminants. Other functions and demands, include the following: This role will perform work functions in an outdoor environment and may not be protected from weather conditions during performance of those functions. This role will perform work in field settings, which require continuous standing and walking for extended periods. The employee will be exposed to moderately high noise levels: There are sufficient noise levels that require shouting to be heard above the noise level. At times this role will sit / stand at an office desk for multiple hours depending on the demands of the job. Exposure to Hazards: This role can be exposed to a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current(s), performing work on scaffolding and in elevated places, or exposure to chemicals in the workplace. Exposure to dust, dirt, contaminants, fumes, and wetness may occur during normal working conditions. Employees are frequently required to work in crawl spaces, shafts, trenches, manholes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia. Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, keyboards, etc. (Repetitive hand motion and typing like functions). Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, crouching, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others. Must follow all safety policies / procedures, and always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to lift 75 pounds at times. Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
