About the role
Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) is seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Activity Specialist to support our students in after-school activities. The Activity Specialist will guide students in developing their special interests while fostering their academic and personal growth.
Responsibilities
- Create and develop age-appropriate lesson plans, activities, and special projects that integrate the arts and academic competencies.
- Facilitate project-based units and attend weekly meetings to discuss and refine lesson plans.
- Work with program participants to enhance their artistic, educational, and leadership skills.
- Organize subject-related trips, guest speakers, special events, and coordinate student exhibitions and college trips.
- Communicate students' progress and insights to the team regularly.
- Act as a role model and collaborate with staff and students on various projects.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (degree preferred)
- At least 1 year of teaching experience
- Specialization in Dance, Tap & Rhythm-Based Cultural / World Dance, Hip-Hop & Urban Styles, or equivalent
- Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with young people
- Excellent planning, organization, communication, and time management skills
- Ability to provide consistent and positive instruction and receive constructive feedback
- Experience in youth development and teaching well-rounded enrichment courses
- Energetic, motivated self-starter with a team player attitude
What You'll Do
Prepare and develop age-appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, activities, and special projects that fuse the arts and academic competencies. Share knowledge of African, African-American, and Latino issues and interpret them into diverse learning opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Schedule
- Promise Academy After School: On Site, Monday-Friday any time from 2 pm-7:30 pm.
- Peacemaker Program: On-Site: Monday-Friday 2 PM-6 P.M.
- Cut Above: Monday-Thursday, 3 pm- 7 pm & Friday's 12 pm-6 pm
- ACE, ETC, CCCC (Zone High School, After school): Monday-Thursday 3 pm-8 pm & Friday's 2 pm-6 pm
- Summer Hours: Monday-Friday, on-site five days a week (40 hours total). Work hours may fall anywhere between 7:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., depending on the site you're hired with.
