About the role
The Cytologist is responsible for preparing, screening, and evaluating non-gynecologic cytology specimens such as body fluids and fine needle aspirations to detect abnormalities, infections, and malignancies. They collaborate closely with pathologists to provide accurate diagnostic information that guides patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform quality assurance, specimen accessioning, staining, and slide maintenance
- Assist with collection procedures and rapid on-site evaluations
- Stay current with industry standards through ongoing education
- Participate in quality improvement programs
- Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional regulations
- Maintain high-quality standards and foster positive relationships with colleagues and clients
- Effectively communicate urgent findings
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent
- Successful completion of an approved cytology training program
- Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of non-gynecologic cytology experience
- Familiarity with FNA procedures and molecular techniques
