About the role
The Cytologist is responsible for preparing, screening, and evaluating non-gynecologic cytology specimens such as body fluids and fine needle aspirations to detect abnormalities, infections, and malignancies. They collaborate closely with pathologists to provide accurate diagnostic information that guides patient care.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, screen, and evaluate non-gynecologic cytology specimens (e.g., body fluids, fine needle aspirations)
- Detect abnormalities, infections, and malignancies in cytology specimens
- Collaborate with pathologists to provide accurate diagnostic information for patient care
- Perform quality assurance, specimen accessioning, staining, and slide maintenance
- Assist with collection procedures and rapid on-site evaluations
- Stay current with industry standards through ongoing education
- Participate in quality improvement programs and ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional regulations
- Maintain high-quality standards and foster positive relationships with colleagues and clients
- Communicate urgent findings effectively
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent
- Successful completion of an approved cytology training program
- ASCP certification or equivalent
Qualifications
- Three years of non-gynecologic cytology experience (preferred)
- Familiarity with fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures (preferred)
- Familiarity with molecular techniques (preferred)
