Cytotechnologist

About the Role

Performs microscopic screening of gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) slide preparations for the detection of precancerous and cancerous conditions. Provides assistance and adequacy assessment of Fine Needle Aspirate procedures. Identifies normal and abnormal cellular constituents, evaluates specimens’ adequacy, and marks cells most representative of any pathologic process. Develops a diagnosis supported by cellular evidence in conjunction with clinical history and data. Enters diagnosis on gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Records daily workload, hours worked, and hours screened in compliance with New York State and Federal regulations and laboratory limits. Maintains quality control records, procedure manuals, and confidentiality of patient records. Teaches rotating students, residents, and/or fellows. Enhances professional growth through educational programs, literature, and meetings.

Responsibilities

• Identifies normal and abnormal cellular constituents; evaluates specimens’ adequacy.
• Marks cells most representative of any pathologic process.
• Develops diagnoses supported by cellular evidence and clinical data.
• Enters diagnoses on gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens.
• Records daily workload, hours worked, and hours screened in compliance with regulations.
• Maintains quality control records and procedure manuals.
• Prepares FNA slides and performs fast stains for cytopathologist review.
• Processes cytology specimens and identifies FISH slides for pathologist review.
• Solves staining and preparation issues; evaluates and implements new procedures.
• Reports cytology procedure information/results according to departmental procedures.
• Maintains microscope and related equipment/supplies.
• Seeks missing clinical history or data from requisitions.
• Teaches rotating students, residents, and/or fellows.
• Maintains departmental policies, quality assurance, safety, and compliance standards.
• Participates in professional development through education, literature, and meetings.
• Prepares written documentation, records, reports, and statistics as required.
• Attends meetings as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

• **License Requirement**: Possession of a full license to practice as a Cytotechnologist in New York State; or eligibility for full licensure.
• **Education and Experience**:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology; or
  • Bachelor’s degree with a one-year course of study at an accredited school of Cytotechnology.
• **Notes**: Full license-eligible incumbents must obtain and maintain New York State Cytotechnologist licensure within six months of appointment. Required degrees must be from accredited institutions or recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Pay

Starting hourly rate: $31.99/hr + $12.00/hr geographic differential. Includes a full comprehensive benefits package.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours/week, First Shift.
