About the role

The role involves performing various cytogenetic procedures, including sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation and staining, microscopic analysis, photography, karyotyping, and FISH analysis.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure the integrity of specimens during all phases of specimen processing.
  • Conduct a variety of culturing procedures, such as establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures; monitoring growth levels; and making decisions on feeding, subculturing, and harvesting.
  • Perform various slide preparations and staining techniques, including standard Geisma, Q-, R-, C- banding, and NOR staining.
  • Carry out detailed microscopic analysis, ruling out chromosomal mosaicism, and make decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation.
  • Operate automated karyotyping equipment.
  • Carry out FISH processing and analysis.
  • Manage record keeping, maintain stock supply levels, orient new personnel in the lab, institute new procedures, and participate in continuing education programs.
  • Apply cryogenic technology in specimen storage when necessary.
  • Coordinate specific functions with laboratory personnel.
  • Manage quality control of culture apparatus, including monitoring CO2 levels in incubators, CO2 supply, periodic disinfection of incubators, maintenance of hoods, and monitoring liquid N2 levels.
  • Stay informed about research and development within the cytogenetics field.
  • Perform validation studies for new test development and participate in compiling validation data.
  • Report any problems that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel.
  • Utilize effective LIS and equipment data management skills.

Skills And Requirements

  • Ability to sit for long periods during analytical procedures and stand for long periods during harvest procedures.
  • Manual dexterity is required.
  • Ability to work in an area containing biohazardous materials, along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards.
  • Responsibility to work in a safe manner.
  • May need to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.

CG(ASCP) certification required.

  • In FISH Analysis
  • In Chromosome Analysis (blood and bone marrow)
  • In Cytogenetics Wet Bench Setup

Schedule

Hours: Sunday 8:00am - 5:30pm, Monday - Wednesday 10:30am - 9:00pm, with rotating holidays.
