About the role

The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary customers, City residents. The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management’s Citywide Concrete Unit supports the agency’s goal to enhance, rehabilitate, and maintain the City’s infrastructure by acting as the agency’s primary construction unit.

Responsibilities

• Lay brick and masonry on given structures
• Perform fireproofing, block arching, terra cotta cutting and setting
• Construct brick masonry for sewers and manholes
• Lay cobblestone
• Set granite curb
• Lay pavers
• Read and follow plans and specifications
• Keep jobs and other records
• May supervise assigned personnel
• May be assigned additional duties in line with the title

Requirements

By the last day of the Application Period you must have:

• Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Bricklayer; or
• At least three years of experience as described above and sufficient bricklayer apprentice experience or training in the bricklaying field acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of the above experience or training.

Preferred Skills

• Must be serving permanently in the title, or must be reachable on the civil service list, Exam # 0155, or have filed and be reachable on either Exam # 4518 or 4020
• Possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions (must be maintained throughout duration of employment)

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
