Custodian - Various Work Schedules/Multiple Buildings - (Two Positions)
About the role
The Facilities Operations Department at the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus, is seeking two Custodian positions. The shifts available are 1st Shift Wednesday – Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 1st Shift Saturday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings)
- Dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers
- Washes, dusts and polishes glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment
- Makes beds
- Checks, marks, stores and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area)
- Collects and counts soiled laundry
- Distributes, empties and sterilizes glassware, wash basins and bedpans
- Sweeps walks
- Collects and disposes of trash
- Reports needs for repairs
- Performs minor maintenance
- Runs errands
- Inspects buildings for damage and reports conditions to supervisor
- May change light bulbs and replace fuses
- May lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.
- May replace ceiling or floor tiles
- May remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings
- May sand and salt stairways and walkways
- May move furniture and/or set-up classrooms
- Performs related duties as required
Qualifications
Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. Three or more years of custodial experience in settings such as college campuses, residential facilities, commercial buildings and/or medical facilities. Demonstrated experience in operating custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, swing machines, back-pack vacuums, carpet extractors, and/or ride-on auto scrubbers.
Special Requirements
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity
- Maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties
- Walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently
- Lift, carry and push material weighing up to 50 lbs
- Utilize ladders, floor polishers, buffers and vacuums
- Utilize appropriate equipment, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary
Working Conditions
May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
Pay
Hourly salary is $22.13/hour and is non-negotiable for those new to State Employment; the hourly rate of pay for current NP-2 employees is calculated based on current salary/step. Salary range is $43,301.00-$54,108.00 yearly.
Schedule
Permanent, full-time, positions working 37.5 hours per week. Work schedule could be 1st Shift Wednesday – Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 1st Shift Saturday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. dependent upon operating needs.
