About the role

The Custodian Specialist is responsible for providing a clean, safe, attractive, and healthy environment for patrons and staff. This role focuses on carpet cleaning and supporting other Custodian Specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Use commercial and household materials and equipment to clean restrooms, facilities, public areas, and offices.
  • Clean and disinfect areas to prevent the spread of infectious pathogens.
  • Vacuum and spot clean carpets.
  • Gather and dispose of trash and recycling.
  • Replenish restroom supplies; wash walls and windows, dust furniture, polish metal work.
  • Clean lighting fixtures, windows, windowsills, window blinds, screens, tops of windows, door, frames, and other areas.
  • Respond to work requests, including handling spills, clogs, bio-fluid cleanup, and other daily cleanups.
  • Maintain inventory of housekeeping supplies and order as needed.
  • Attend meetings, trainings as required.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.
  • Manage time effectively to complete tasks within scheduled shifts.
  • Ensure safety of the building including locking doors and monitoring security.
  • Support a safe work environment.
  • Dust furniture, shelving, and other areas.
  • Perform heavy cleaning tasks on a regular schedule, including scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED, plus two years of custodial experience.
  • Valid Washington state driver's license, safe driving record, and three years of driving experience.

  • Compensation range: $21.27 - $29.45 per hour.

  • Vacuum and spot clean carpets.
  • Gather and dispose of trash and recycling.
  • Replenish restroom supplies; wash walls and windows, dust furniture, polish metal work.
  • Clean lighting fixtures, windows, windowsills, window blinds, screens, tops of windows, door, frames, and other areas.
  • Respond to work requests, including handling spills, clogs, bio-fluid cleanup, and other day-to-day cleanup.
  • Maintain inventory of housekeeping supplies and order as needed.
  • Attend meetings, trainings as required.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.
  • Manage time effectively to complete tasks within scheduled shift.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to learn to use and operate both light and commercial cleaning equipment safely.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals, cleaning agents, disinfectants, sanitizers, degreasers, and lubricants.
  • Ability to practice and enforce appropriate safety procedures.
  • Ability to organize supplies and materials and to order replacement materials within established guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse audience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical and safety instructions, warnings, and other written materials.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, perform required data entry proficiently, and utilize computer software and specialized programs.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations directly related to the work being performed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to create and maintain an inclusive environment where staff and patrons are respected and feel safe, supported, and valued.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent movement, lifting, carrying, and maneuvering over extended periods of time.
  • Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and/or kneeling.
  • Occasional telephones and other office equipment.
  • Noise from other equipment, vehicles, etc.
  • Periodic exposure to dust, dirt, and noise while work is conducted.
  • Moves between locations within the library and to/from other locations.
  • Visual acuity essential for tasks including identifying, observing, and evaluating the safety and cleanliness of workspaces and surrounding areas.
  • Work performed and delivered is guided by precise deadlines.
  • High cognitive demands including attention to detail, prioritizing, and following clear procedures.
  • Good communication skills, customer service abilities, and multitasking are also essential for success in this role.

Schedule

This is a full-time, non-exempt 40-hour per week position. Schedules are subject to change to meet the needs of the library. The typical custodial shift is from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM.
