About the role

The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior-level) custodial work. Responsibilities include performing, coordinating, cleaning, and sanitizing state hospital buildings and treatment units; providing housekeeping services in a clinical setting, which also involves conducting inspections of the buildings and equipment. The Custodian III orders and restocks supplies and equipment and provides backup to other custodians as needed. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Other duties include actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Responsibilities

• Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
• Maintains cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment, and maintains records of the supplies used, and building property maintenance tools/equipment.
• Ensures proper usage and maintenance, and if necessary, minor repairs on buildings and equipment (e.g., buffers, waxing machines, biohazard disposal units, vacuums).
• Ensures custodial supplies are restocked.
• Coordinates and performs the cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting restrooms, all office surfaces/furniture, treatment areas, patient bedrooms, and other hospital areas, utilizing cleaning chemicals as needed; ensures all waste/trash is collected and disposed of regularly.
• Ensures all patient units meet or exceed the minimum standard guidelines for cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control.
• Inspects the buildings and identifies any problem areas in need of follow-up, and ensures follow-up occurs.
• Assists the Custodian Manager in implementing the overall hospital safety and infection control program.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Requirements

• One of the following:
  • One year of experience in custodial/housekeeping or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or other similar residential equivalent.
  • Eighteen (18) months of proven work experience.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
• Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients.
• Ability to work irregular hours and travel up to 20%.
• Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
• Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
• Must be at least 18 years of age (21 for Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants).
• Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required; may be required to wear a mask if not immunized for influenza.

Skills

• Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing floors.
• Knowledge of how to clean and disinfect restrooms and shower stalls.
• Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
• Skills in the use of custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment.
• Skills in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
• Ability to stay on task and complete work in a timely manner.

Pay

Salary Range: $2,962.92 - $3,547.58 per month

Schedule

• Full-time, regular position.
• Day shift.
• May require overtime, extended hours, or alternate shift patterns for disaster response or COOP activation.
