Custodian III

About the role

The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior-level) custodial work, including cleaning, sanitizing, and coordinating housekeeping services in a residential setting at a state supported living center. This role involves inspecting buildings and equipment, ordering and restocking supplies, and providing backup to other custodians. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.
Responsibilities
- Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule, extended shifts, overtime, or on-call status on a rotating schedule.
- Maintains cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment; records usage and ensures proper maintenance and minor repairs of building property and tools (e.g., buffers, waxing machines, biohazard disposal units, vacuums).
- Coordinates and performs cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting of restrooms, offices, programming areas, residents’ homes and bedrooms, and other facility areas using appropriate cleaning chemicals.
- Ensures all waste and trash is collected and disposed of regularly.
- Ensures resident homes/units meet or exceed minimum standards for cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control.
- Inspects buildings, identifies problem areas, and ensures follow-up occurs.
- Assists the Custodian Manager in implementing the overall safety and infection control program.
- Oversees the work of Custodians I and II staff as needed and assists in training and coaching.
- May participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is preferred.
- At least six (6) months of paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work is required; one (1) year is preferred.
- One (1) year of experience working in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of licensure.
- Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).
- Males between the ages of 18–25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- Must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.
- Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours as required.
- Flexibility in work hours may be required; position may be subject to random drug testing.
Skills
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, stripping and waxing floors, and cleaning/disinfecting restrooms and shower stalls.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment, as well as building maintenance tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work in a timely manner.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers, residents, and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.

Pay
Salary Range: $2,962.92 - $3,547.58 per month
Schedule
- Full-time, regular position.
- Day shift.
- Not eligible for telework.
- Travel: Up to 5%.
