Custodian Helper

About the role

Part‑time Custodian Helper (20 hrs/week) in the Early Childhood Services department at the Delancey Family & Childcare Center, reporting to the Site Director.

Responsibilities

• Sweeping, mopping, and waxing all floors on site.
• Ensuring rest rooms and all spaces are free of debris, dust, and dirt; maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the day.
• Removing and cleaning garbage bins.
• Washing walls and surfaces.
• Cleaning fixtures, toilets, and washbowls.
• Maintaining Infection Control Logs, playground safety logs, carbon monoxide/smoke alarm and fire panel logs.
• Keeping inventory of distributed sanitary supplies and requesting more when needed.
• Repairing peeling paint, play equipment, furniture, and other site repairs as needed.
• Assisting in moving heavy items throughout the site.
• Immediately repairing hazardous conditions (classroom and/or playground), replacing lights.
• Calling NYCHA to place tickets on repairs requiring NYCHA maintenance.
• Performing daily site checks and reporting concerns to the Site Director.

Requirements

• Previous experience in general janitorial duties (cleaning, repairing, painting).
• Ability to read and write to follow work schedules and keep inventory.
• Friendly and cheerful personality for cooperative interactions with staff, families, and children.
• Ability to maintain personal work habits.
• Good health, including annual physical.
• Must pass three fire safety examinations (F‑01, F‑07, S‑95) during the probation period.
• Pre‑employment clearance: NYS DOI fingerprint screening, NYS Central Registry clearance, Sex Offender Registry clearance, three reference checks, physical exam with updated TB test, Tdap, MMR, varicella (fees may apply).
• Meet all employee health requirements per Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start performance standards.
• Mandated Reporter training certificate (renewed every 2 years) and compliance with agency policy on child abuse identification and reporting.
• Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases certificate within the first year of employment.

Pay

$18,095.48 per year (benefits included per union contract).

Schedule

Monday – Friday: 2 pm – 6 pm (with possible shifts of 8 am – 4 pm, 9 am – 5 pm, or 10 am – 6 pm when needed). Schedule may vary due to program needs.
