General Definition of Work

The head custodian, under moderate supervision, oversees custodial personnel at an assigned school while maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment for staff, students, and visitors. Responsibilities include adhering to policies, managing staff, inspecting facilities, and performing custodial duties.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to adhere to state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures; lead, manage, and evaluate assigned staff; record personnel issues; assist in scheduling; train new staff; coordinate with other departments; inspect work; investigate complaints; inspect facilities; and perform custodial tasks.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other places as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures - Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff in the district - Record any personnel related issues in key incident journals - Assist the area leader in the preparation of work schedules - Complete quality assurance inspection reports and submit to area leader - Train new staff regarding cleaning chemicals, equipment, and related supplies and materials - Coordinate activities with other departments to ensure service is provided efficiently - Inspect work performed to ensure that it meets expectations and established standards - Investigate complaints about service and equipment. Take necessary corrective action - Inspect the physical condition of facilities to determine the type of work required - Perform duties of a custodian including: - Maintaining cleanliness both inside and outside the facility through the execution of established procedures - Inspecting school grounds daily to remove debris and other items that could become a safety hazard or detract from the general appearance of the school - Cleaning classrooms, including but not limited to, removing trash, dusting furniture and equipment, sweeping and mopping the floors, and polishing metal fixtures - Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, including but not limited to, fixtures, sinks, urinals, toilets, showers; replenishing supplies in restrooms - Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing, stripping, and polishing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets - Cleaning all staff and special purpose areas, including but not limited to, dusting and polishing furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment - Maintaining cleanliness of windows, mirrors, walls, desks, and tables/countertops - Following developed work schedules for scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors - Following developed work schedules for extracting, spot cleaning, and vacuuming carpeted areas - Performing light maintenance by replacing light bulbs and air filters, cleaning air vents, and adjusting blinds/shades as requested - Emptying, cleaning, and sanitizing waste receptacles; picking up papers and other debris - Assisting in receiving, storing, and distributing supplies and equipment as needed. Keeping all storage areas organized and clean - Moving and arranging furniture and equipment; setting up rooms for conferences and meetings - Identifying and reporting building maintenance needs; assisting maintenance staff with repairs - Maintaining and operating a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum polishers and wax strippers - Performing related work as assigned or required

Education and Experience

- Completion of education at a level which provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job required - High school diploma or equivalent preferred - Minimum of three (3) years of custodial experience required - Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation - Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
