Custodian ESC (Part-Time) 2026-27 (Internal Applicants Only)

About the Role

The Custodian is responsible for performing custodial work in and around school buildings to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient educational facility. This role involves reporting any conditions beyond the employee's control to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors; cleans and maintains equipment.
• Empties and cleans pencil sharpeners, trash, and recycle bins.
• Cleans and maintains furniture, fixtures, windows, vacuums carpets, curtains, blinds, and furniture; shampoos carpets.
• Cleans and disinfects restrooms; keeps them supplied with paper towels and soap.
• Cleans assigned offices and classrooms.
• Moves furniture and equipment; arranges tables and chairs for special events.
• Collects and disposes of garbage and recyclables.
• Shovels snow, sweeps, and washes walks; keeps grounds clean.
• Performs minor maintenance on site equipment and reports issues, such as unstopping sinks, replacing burned-out light bulbs and tubes.
• Secures the building by checking the exterior, locking doors, closing windows, turning off lights and equipment, and setting alarms.
• Assists staff and community groups.
• Performs other related work as required by facility conditions or requested by the building administrator and/or custodial manager/supervisor.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or strong evidence of reading, writing, and communication skills.
• One year of public school experience (preferred).
• Two years of verifiable, paid commercial building custodial experience.

Knowledge

• District equipment maintenance.
• Cleaning methods and safety practices.
• Use of equipment and supplies.
• Basic customer service and computer skills.

Skills

• Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to understand directions within job responsibilities.
• Ability to maintain a responsive relationship with the building manager and/or head custodian.
• Ability to operate hand and power district equipment.
• Ability to handle fragile items carefully and practice safety precautions.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently and over 50 lbs with assistance.
• Ability to perform sustained physical work and move with agility.
• Ability to work while standing on a stepladder and/or lift.
• Ability to maintain good public relations with a positive and willing attitude.
• Ability to work different shift times as required throughout the year.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable policies and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet punctuality and attendance expectations.

Physical Requirements

• Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
• Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

Pay

$32.96/hour to $33.96/hour based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement.

Schedule

25 hours per week for a 247-day annual assignment.
