Custodian Day Porter II
General Description
The position is responsible for general cleaning duties of a school building that may require frequent lifting up to 45 pounds, moving up to 75 pounds, and the operation of commercial cleaning equipment. Tasks are specific with recurring assignments and are performed under general supervision of the Building Operations Supervisor. The role may require work after hours, weekends, and holidays, and is scheduled Monday – Friday.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs general cleaning duties to include inside fixtures, floors, walls, and windows.
- Performs intermediate to advanced tasks in floor care, upholstery, window covering maintenance, and deep‑cleaning tasks.
- Performs small leadership support tasks, such as coordinating and performing preventative custodial maintenance.
- Prepares standard reports including daily task reports, work control documents, work orders, and inventory checklists.
- Works independently and in a team environment to complete assigned duties.
- Applies all environmental, safety, and health requirements in day‑to‑day tasks.
- Assists with school lunch coverage (day shift) and cleaning of the cafeteria.
- Performs cleaning duties that include moving furniture, stripping floors, snow removal, and trash removal.
- Monitors halls and restrooms to ensure adequate stock levels.
- Secures the building where applicable.
- Keeps grounds and outside walkways clean around the immediate perimeter of the building.
- Provides coverage for after‑school and weekend activities.
- Sets up and tears down for school events.
- May occasionally assist the Building Operations Supervisor and maintenance personnel with building repairs.
- Performs building inspections using CleanTelligent software.
- Unlocks and locks facilities as required.
- Reports maintenance issues and preventative repairs daily.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and cleaning standards.
- Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment.
- Proficiency in standard English to read, communicate, understand and follow written instructions; write simple sentences; and comprehend product labeling.
- Ability to work safely and efficiently with machinery.
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
- Good customer service, communication, comprehension, and interpersonal skills.
- Effective spoken English communication.
- Valid VA driver’s license and ability to drive; subject to annual driving checks per Policy 5431.
- Successful completion of required background investigations/tests:
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation
- State Police Criminal History Investigation
- Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test
Physical Demands
The employee regularly uses hands and fingers, reaches with hands and arms, handles paper files, records, computers, and equipment controls, talks, and hears. The role requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Frequent lifting up to 45 pounds and moving up to 75 pounds is required, along with the strength to operate commercial cleaning equipment.
Work Environment
The employee may work near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasional exposure to hot or cold conditions and risk of electrical shock occurs. Some work is performed outdoors. Noise level is moderate.
Pay
Compensation: $32,084.94 – $54,110.70
Schedule
Monday – Friday; may be required to work after hours, weekends, and holidays. 8 hours per day, 260 days per year.
