About the Role
The Night Lead Custodian assists the custodial staff in providing a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. This role involves performing a variety of custodial tasks, supervising and training custodial personnel, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily duties in assigned areas, including but not limited to:
- Dusting all flat surfaces
- Emptying wastebaskets and pencil sharpeners
- Sweeping floors and straightening desks
- Mopping, spot mopping, and cleaning equipment
- Cleaning and servicing restrooms
- Sweeping assigned hallways, stairs, and landings
- Lowering the flag if necessary
- Cleaning gym, locker room, and auditorium
- Assisting with lunchroom clean-up
- Cleaning fountains, sinks, counters, and desk tops
- Checking the building for vandalism
- Perform weekly duties, including but not limited to:
- Buffing and high dusting
- Carpet spotting
- Replacing light bulbs as needed
- Cleaning whiteboards
- Stripping, sealing, and waxing floors
- Washing walls, lockers, and furniture
- Cleaning carpets
- Perform energy management functions, such as:
- Turning off day lights and turning on night lights
- Turning off water in urinals and unplugging water fountains
- Checking thermostats and boilers
- Consult with the Building Custodial Supervisor regarding school activities and community use of the building, arranging needed services and cleaning.
- Respond to office and staff requests, including set-up of TV, DVR, audio systems, etc.
- Report building maintenance needs, supplies, and equipment needs to the Head Custodian.
- Secure assigned areas by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving.
- Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness and quality of work.
- Assist employees with their Employee Performance Appraisal as requested.
- Remove marks from floors and graffiti from walls as needed.
- Perform duties relating to recycling as requested.
- Respond to emergencies in an appropriate manner.
- Assist with additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
- Ability to use hand tools of the trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and hand tools.
- Ability to use SMART boards, iPads, and basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines.
- Compliance with WPS guidelines for equipment use.
- Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.
- Works in standard office and school building environments, with the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, or snow).
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
- Must meet the required level on the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP), including:
- Climbing stairs and/or ladders
- Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally
- Exerting 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently
- Exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly
- Ability to squat, bend, stoop, reach, push, and pull
- Attendance at required meetings; overtime may be required.
Skills
- Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisors and coordinate work with principals and others.
- Ability to describe cleaning, maintenance, or repair problems orally or in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.
- Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedules set by supervisors.
- Knowledge of asbestos information and mechanical operations.
- Knowledge of custodial duties and functions as required by APPA Level 2 or higher standards.
- Knowledge of procedures for handling hazardous materials and bio-hazardous materials.
- Intermediate computer competency, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate MSDS information effectively.
- Professional manner, positive attitude, and ability to plan, organize, make decisions, and prioritize work.
- Detailed orientation and ability to perform as an effective team leader, managing employees, budgets, and projects.
- Professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to proper standards of dress and appearance.
- Knowledge of the company’s mission, purpose, goals, and the role of every employee in achieving them.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Completion of Proficiency of Custodial Operations certificate preferred.
- Contact with personnel within the district, customers, and vendors.
- Works under the direct supervision of the department supervisor.
- Works with a diverse population, requiring tact and diplomacy.
- Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
- Expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless prior approved leave is obtained.
- Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the supervisor or building administrator.
- Required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for the position.
