Custodial Worker
About the role
This position is with the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) at Appalachian Behavioral Healthcare, located at 100 Hospital Drive, Athens, Ohio 45701. DBH employs over 2,800 staff across six inpatient behavioral health hospitals, Ohio Pharmacy Services, Ohio's prison systems, and the central office in Columbus. This is a classified, full‑time, permanent role covered by the OCSEA/AFSCME bargaining unit (union). Normal working hours are day shift, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. A two‑week (business days) full‑time orientation is required. The position may involve exposure to communicable diseases and unpredictable patient behavior; ongoing training and development are required to remain in the classification.
Responsibilities
- Dust mopping, sweeping, buffing, and waxing floors
- Scrubbing sinks, toilets, countertops, walls, and ceilings
- Dusting and cleaning furniture and equipment
- Emptying and washing trash receptacles
- Removing, cleaning, replacing, and rehanging drapes; installing curtain rods
- Washing windows, polishing mirrors, and cleaning glass surfaces
- Vacuuming and shampooing carpets
- Replenishing supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
- Sweeping and scrubbing corridor floors
- Removing litter from interior and exterior grounds
- Clearing snow and ice from walkways and sweeping walkways
- Reporting signs of fire, illegal entry, theft, or other safety concerns
- Continuously assessing environmental situations, organizational policies, and procedures
- Monitoring staff, clients, and visitors for risk‑related behaviors and reporting as necessary
- Raising and lowering the flag
- Stocking supply closets
- Replacing light bulbs
- Reporting equipment repair needs
- Securing doors and windows
- Moving furniture
- Sorting, washing, and handling linens and laundry
- Attending required in‑service trainings
- Participating in staff meetings
Qualifications
- Formal education in arithmetic (addition and subtraction) and in reading and speaking common English vocabulary
- Classified as unskilled labor under Section 124.11(B)(2) of the Ohio Revised Code; exempt from written examination
- Or equivalent of the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above
Official transcripts are required for all post‑secondary education, coursework, or degrees listed on the application. Transcripts must be submitted before a formal employment offer; failure to provide them within five business days of request results in disqualification. Transcripts printed from an institution’s website are not accepted. DBH reserves the right to evaluate the academic validity of the degree‑granting institution.

Pay
$19.44 per hour (OCSEA Pay Range Schedule, Step 1). Selected candidates typically start at Step 1, with an opportunity for a pay increase after six months of satisfactory performance and yearly raises thereafter.

Permanent, full‑time, day shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
