About the role

Operates Computed Tomography (CT) equipment, prepares patients for examination, and captures appropriate imaging and information for Physician review and diagnosis.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patient for examination, explains procedure in layman terms, and performs thorough screening.
  • Ensures required consent forms have been obtained and positions patient on exam table within gantry.
  • Utilizes special devices (e.g., bromide shield) to reduce exposure to ionizing radiation of radiosensitive areas (e.g., breast, thyroid).
  • Sets up equipment to administer proper procedure in a timely fashion; calculates number of scans and ensures required images are obtained according to Radiologist order.
  • Adjusts CT equipment to capture appropriate field of view and ensures proper slice thickness and couch increment; collaborates with Radiologist to extend parameters within established imaging protocols when needed.
  • Administers intravenous (IV) and oral contrast agents according to Radiologist order; explains administration of IV contrast to patient and confirms there are no contraindications.
  • Completes IV Contrast Information Sheet with information provided by patient, family member, or health care proxy; calculates contrast dose based on patient’s weight.
  • Performs venipuncture of appropriate gauge for examination; utilizes appropriate flush technique for existing IV line and power injector to administer IV contrast.
  • Recognizes and assists in treatment of contrast agent reactions and IV extravasations.
  • Performs CT procedures including abdominal, thoracic, neurological exams, extremities, sub-periosteal implant planning, radiation therapy treatment planning, biopsies, etc.
  • Transmits cases to Radiologist through teleradiology system.

Qualifications

  • Vocational or Technical school Diploma, required.
  • Current license to practice as a Radiology Technologist in New York State, required.
  • Certification in IV Contrast Administration, required within six (6) months of entry date into position.
  • Current ARRT Radiology registration, required.
  • ARRT registration in Computed Tomography (CT), required within eighteen (18) months of entry date into position.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, required.
  • 1–3 years of technical experience, required.
