CT Technologist - Contrast IV

About the role

Operates Computed Tomography (CT) equipment, prepares patients for examination, and captures appropriate imaging and information for Physician review and diagnosis.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patient for examination and explains procedure in layman terms to relieve any potential anxiety
• Performs thorough screening of patients prior to procedure and ensures required consent forms have been obtained
• Positions patient on exam table within gantry and utilizes special devices (e.g., bromide shield) to reduce exposure to ionizing radiation of radiosensitive areas (e.g., breast, thyroid)
• Sets up equipment to administer proper procedure in a timely fashion, calculates number of scans to be obtained, and ensures required images are obtained according to Radiologist order
• Adjusts CT equipment to capture appropriate field of view and ensures proper slice thickness and couch increment
• In collaboration with Radiologist, extends parameters within established imaging protocols, if needed
• Administers intravenous (IV) and oral contrast agents according to Radiologist order, explains the administration of IV contrast to patient, and confirms there are no contraindications to administration of IV contrast agent
• Completes IV Contrast Information Sheet with information provided by patient, family member, or health care proxy and calculates contrast dose based on patient’s weight
• Performs venipuncture of appropriate gauge necessary for examination, utilizes appropriate flush technique for existing IV line if needed, and utilizes power injector to administer IV contrast
• Recognizes and assists in treatment of contrast agent reactions and IV extravasations
• Performs CT procedures including abdominal, thoracic, neurological exams, extremities, sub-periosteal implant planning, radiation therapy treatment planning, biopsies, etc.
• Transmits cases to Radiologist through teleradiology system

Qualifications

• Vocational or Technical school Diploma
• Current license to practice as a Radiology Technologist in New York State
• Certification in IV Contrast Administration, required within six (6) months of entry date into position
• Current ARRT Radiology registration
• ARRT registration in Computed Tomography (CT), required within eighteen (18) months of entry date into position
• Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
• 1–3 years of technical experience
