Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents in the medical record a complete history and physical examination for acute and complex chronically ill patients.
  • Orders and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Formulates differential diagnoses by priority. Identifies expected outcomes from diagnosis, and formulates and documents a plan of care to address immediate critical care needs.
  • Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Affords care to patients in the MICU, SICU, and PCU, coordinating daily rounds with the Attending and Intensivist physician teams, presenting 24 hour patient report, and collaborating in plan of care.
  • May serve as the first responder for both nursing and house staff in the event of patient status changes, orders, and in situations requiring procedural and resuscitative interventions.
  • Prescribes diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical, needed to achieve expected outcomes. Prescriptive authority for prescribing, ordering, and or administering drugs; including (but not limited to) schedule II, III, IV, and V drugs and necessary medical devices.
  • Performs advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation, including minor suturing, complex wound management, line and tube placements and removals.
  • Documents/dictates key components of patient's progress via daily progress note, transfer, and discharge summary, and/or clinic note where applicable.
  • Assesses educational needs of the patient-care staff and provide one-on-one as well as formal education as needed. Maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary health care team. Implements and evaluates appropriate educational programs for DHMC MICU patient care staff and other healthcare providers as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with MICU, SICU and PCU leadership in advancing cross-unit, cross-disciplinary performance initiatives. Actively participates in Grand Rounds, APN council meetings, faculty and unit meetings, M&M presentations.
  • Participates in clinical education of healthcare students as seen fit by supervising medical staff.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Required or Master's Degree from an accredited program as a physician assistant.
  • Doctorate Degree Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of Medical ICU, surgical ICU, emergency medicine or urgent care medicine or adult hospital medicine experience preferred.
  • 1-3 years experience in cardiology/ cardiothoracic surgery/critical care is preferred and 1-3 years critical care nursing experience preferred or 1-3 years Physician assistant experience in acute care, emergency or hospitalist medicine.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical principals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources for appropriate procedures.
  • Skill in eliciting history from patients, performing physical exams and formulating assessments of and treatment plans for patients.
  • Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies to aid in diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of appropriate administration and prescription of medications.
  • Skill in utilizing the principles and practices of effective and persuasive communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies.
  • Skill in obtaining information from patients, calming and reassuring patients and motivating patients to accept treatments.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in selecting proper treatment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports.
  • Demonstrated skills in presenting complex clinical data in a team setting, including bed-side presentations, clinical conferences and group settings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
  • Strong foundation in evidenced based practice and education and has a responsibility for ensuring adherence to critical care pathways and protocols and ensures an environment of safe quality care.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.
  • Computer skills required.

Pay

$132,600.00 - $150,600.00 / yr (Pay range listed is for 1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE). See Work Type for actual FTE)
