About the Role

Under the supervision of the Supervising Registered Nurse II/III, Correctional Facility (CF), the incumbent serves as a designated member of the institution’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). This interdisciplinary team provides emergent, in-person crisis assessment and intervention services to patients experiencing acute psychiatric distress, including:

  • Suicidal ideation
  • Self-injurious behavior
  • Psychosis
  • Severe mood or anxiety symptoms
  • Trauma-related symptoms
  • Behavioral decompensation

Services are delivered as close to the patient’s housing unit as operationally feasible, in collaboration with mental health clinicians, custody supervisory staff, and in consultation with psychiatry.

The CIT Registered Nurse (RN) organizes and provides necessary nursing care in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and program requirements across various correctional health care settings. In collaboration with the health care team, the CIT RN ensures the delivery of appropriate and timely health care to patients and coordinates interdisciplinary communication to promote continuity of care. The role involves addressing ongoing health care needs and promoting the efficient use of health care resources.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current license as a Registered Nurse in California. (Applicants who do not meet this requirement may still apply but must secure the required license before eligibility for appointment.)

To obtain list eligibility for this position, candidates must first take and pass the CalCareers examination for the Registered Nurse, Correctional Facility classification.

Pay

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) reduces the base salary of full-time employees in Bargaining Unit 17 (and related Excluded, Exempt, and Statutory Exempt employees) by 3%. In exchange, employees receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions on a prorated basis, while permanent intermittent employees are subject to the reduction based on hours worked per pay period. Salaries listed do not reflect these recent changes.
